About the Railhouse

The vintage photo below is of the Old Railroad Passenger Station, which is still next door, and now houses the local Chamber of Commerce. On the far right is the Old Freight Station, which is now our Riley's Railhouse.

THE LIFE OF THE FREIGHT DEPOT

The railroads came to northern Indiana in the 1850s, which linked the Great Lakes region with the East Coast. This made both freight shipping and passenger travel both easier, faster, and less rigorous than overland travel.

THE DEPOT'S NEW INCARNATION

About 1960, after fifty years of service, the Freight Depot at Chesterton was abandoned by the railroad.
